People and culture
Egypt's population is primarily composed of ethnic Egyptians, who make up around 99% of the country's citizens. While a majority of Egyptians are Muslim, there is a significant Coptic Christian minority. Other smaller groups include Bedouins, Berbers, and Nubians.
Ethnic Egyptians:
The vast majority of Egyptians are considered to be of Hamitic origin, with Mediterranean and Arab influences, particularly in the north.
The fellahin, or peasant agriculturists, in the Nile Delta are a significant part of this group.
Upper Egyptians, or Ṣaʿīdī, are ethnically similar to Lower Egyptians but tend to be more culturally conservative.
Nubians, found in the southern parts of the Nile Valley, have distinct cultural and ethnic differences.
Foreign influences, such as Persians, Romans, Greeks, and others, have contributed to a more diverse mix of physical types in urban areas.
